CAFE MORTEL

Updated: Oct 1

On 11 July, twenty curious individuals descended into the Maxwell Social Club cellar to confront their respective mortality. Led by Ruby Cohen of Café Mortel London, they explored the main theme of “What makes life worth living?” and its tangents. What could have resulted in the entrenched bias of strangers butting heads for hours resulted in deep connection through shared vulnerability in the face of the unknown. Cohen set the stage for the night by sharing her vulnerabilities and deftly guided the conversation to its intriguing, if not cathartic, end.

To further immerse our guests in the experience, Libitm set up olfactory synesthesia stations—various Inverso Profumi cents inhabiting fishbowls suspended in the cellar’s copper tub. Guests took turns writing down the memories they associated with each scent, capturing phantom images of the past intertwined in the present moment.

Supporting the conversation itself was Dream Tea NYC, which sponsored the event by providing a unique blend made just for this night. The earthy flavors perfectly soothed open souls as everyone shared their insecurities, hopes, wishes, and perspectives. Not to mention the blend paired perfectly with Lady Wong’s scrumptious cakes.

Altogether it was a night of shared introspection that everyone could walk away from feeling balanced and intrigued.
